Students will continue from MUSI220 and Soloist Studies 2 to develop their individual musical persona and instrumental command, through 1/1 lessons with their performance tutor and in working intensely with the designated pianist. As well students will continue to examine through round table seminars, various topics that relate to the demands of a soloist on the international stage. These topics will include public speaking, original creative thought and insight into musical and artistic issues of the day, how to work constructively with composers in creating new works as well as discussing the various paths to a career.

This paper will be taught in a series of 1 to 1 lessons, up to 3 times per week, and will be administered by the individual instrumental or singing tutor and/or with the designated piano accompanist. In addition there will be frequently called one hour seminars which may be self monitored, dealing with intense exploration of chosen topics that relate to performance practices, historical and biographical topics and preparation for presenting public introductions to the works that are being discussed.

Students who successfully complete the course should be able to:

  • Performance excellence
    At the end of this third year paper, the student should be performing in public recitals and events at a very high professional (cd quality) standard, which should see a performance of this quality being acceptable in concert halls around the world, as well as being successful, up to being a semi-finalist, at international competitions outside New Zealand.

There will be 2 full 90 minute public recitals which make up 80% of the final grade and 2 oral presentations that make up the internal assessments for this paper. Throughout the year the students will receive written and verbal comments on the development of skills and expressions during the on-stage presentations in Cello Class, Performance hour and outside performances
